Romando Jean left the beautiful Bahamas behind for snowy cold Edmonton. Romando’s legal guardians Shelly and Ben Cavina met him about nine years ago in Freeport, Bahamas and brought him into the family, noticing really quick how he had a nature talent for running track.
His parents put him in the best programs they could, however they knew being Canadians themselves they would like to have him back in their home country training here to some day compete at the highest level possible, the Olympics. In June of this past year, Romando packed his bags and moved to Sherwood Park to live with his aunt and uncle, as well as Tanya and Dave Bowerman.
The day after his arrival he was already at the Edmonton Kinsmen centre signing up to join the very successful club the Edmonton Columbians Track Club. The club is known for the success of sending athletes to national level meets, as well as training programs for at least 50 CFL football players over the years.
Romando will train here for as long as it takes to improve his times in the 400 and 800 metre. His coach David Lee Pong said, “He’s a pretty decent athlete we just need to make some adjustments and hopefully we can achieve his goals together.” For now Romando has no time line of how long he plans to stay and his aunt Tanya expressed, “we couldn’t be more happy for him that he has now found this track family.” Hopefully you will see Romando Jean running in red and white at the Olympic games.
